TPO Membranes

Designed to bring together the strength and durability of EPDM rubber with the consistent performance of hot-air weldable seams, TPO membranes are gradually making waves among roofing contractors. Tested and proven to show increased resistance to ozone and algae growth, TPO membranes are one of the most environmentally friendly materials for roofs to date.

In addition, they are also shown to feature up to four times the seam strength of traditional EPDM adhesive and tape seams. Further testing was made to highlight the materials’ notable resistance to tears, ballistic impact, and punctures while still maintaining sufficient flexibility for the ease of building movement. The manufacturers have begun advertising it as seamless or monolithic, thanks to the many features that have made it a strong competitor in the roofing industry.

TPO membranes are typically available with thicknesses at .045 or .060 mils and come in white, light gray, or black. Depending on the manufacturer, the width is available from 6 to 6.5 feet and 100 feet in length. Methods of installing include fully-adhered, mechanically-attached, or ballasted. When properly installed, TPO membrane roofs have service lives that can span from 10 up to 20 years depending on the method of installation used by the contractor.

As with all roofing systems, proper installation and regular maintenance can help to greatly lengthen the overall lifespan of your roof. Factors such as weather conditions and the slope of your roof play important parts in this equation. If you plan to switch to TPO roofs, a full installation that includes the complete removal of the old roofing system down to the deck can help maximize the material.
